A Community growing rapidly!

INETA Europe community is growing rapidly thanks to the involvement and efforts that many individuals make in their local and regional areas.

Artemakis Artemiou, President of Cyprus .NET User Group, has been elected to the position of Cyprus country leader and will immediately be stepping into the role. Lars Wilhelmsen is the new country leader for Norway following Tor Einar Solli, who did a remarkable job over years by supporting Norwegian community. Our UG leader community is not less vibrant and dynamic. I was glad to meet Jimmy, brand new UG leader who sat up a new user group in the UK, currently heading towards its first meeting later this month.

INETA Europe currently serves 366 user groups in more than 30 countries in Europe.

Dear volunteers, I would really like to express my gratitude and heartfelt thanks to you for all your positive energy, support, and for possessing an inclination towards making improvements in the .NET developer community in Europe. Our sponsors understand the valuable contribution that volunteers make and therefore we are more than happy to inform you in this newsletter about a few additional benefits we would love to share with you.

Thank you all for your help and support!

How and Why To Use Live Meeting in User Group Activities

Microsoft Office Live Meeting 2007 is a great and free tool for collaboration and connection between remote locations and for sharing ideas, using voice and video. In Croatia, we have a few User Groups. Each Group works independent and organizes events, trainings and workshops on their own location. Some Groups are able to work with the most popular speakers what depends on location. With Microsoft Office Live Meeting User Groups will be able to work together in the same time, share their experience, knowledge, good ideas and present their work to all Community members. The most important and useful feature of Live Meeting is sharing programs or desktop. With this function, all User Groups will be able, for example, to develop software applications and build new projects together.

We had integrated Live Meeting into the Educational System and now we have amazing results of usage. Here is a story about them:

About one year ago, Croatian teachers started to use Microsoft Office Live Meeting but with a lot of skepticism. ICT teachers had been introduced to all technical features of Live Meeting and they had a chance to try and use this tool for the first time. And they started to use it but not so often and not exactly in an appropriate way. They didn’t trust internet connection and they didn’t believe a lot in success. They asked themselves: “Is it human to talk with computer and some virtual colleagues?” They also asked themselves: “How can I deliver and share my emotions and feelings about my work and projects if I don’t look them in the eyes?”

In July 2008th we managed to overcome skepticism. We organized a huge and very special training via Live Meeting with subject Microsoft Expression Studio as part of ETTA (Education and Teacher Training Agency) activities, training for ICT teachers from primary and secondary schools. It was definitely the most complex usage of Live Meeting, with a great number of participants and locations included. It was held simultaneously at 12 locations in 9 educational institutions, reaching total of some 200 (out of 1.300) ICT teachers in Croatia.
It was a very important step. Teachers realized that they can save time and money and what is the most important, with Live Meeting they can learn and collaborate wherever they are.

Nowadays, there is a totally different situation. Teachers use Live Meeting very often for collaboration with other teachers and students from different towns and districts. But the most interesting thing is that those teachers are not only ICT teachers. Teachers who teach different subjects in schools are included too, and they are delighted with all goodies which Live Meeting brings itself.

Two months ago we started with weekly webcasts. Three times a week, different subjects, about 25 webcasts and about 500 teachers involved as attendees. This kind of project is huge and the first one in our educational system to use new technology, with no costs, and is intended as weekly professional trainings for teachers.

And last but not least, we are the first in Central and East Europe who have delivered this kind of structural education, only and exclusively assigned for teachers. Our teachers use Live Meeting a lot and they are looking for more and more activities through Live Meeting.
